Overnight, bacteria and dead cells build up on the tongue – in Ayurveda, known as "Jihwa Prakshalana", the tongue is traditionally cleaned each morning before eating. Ayurvedic teaching sees this as an important step in activating the body and digestion for the day ahead.
- Regular scraping can help reduce bad breath and improve taste perception
- Copper: naturally antimicrobial; copper ions can bind odour-causing sulphur compounds. Over time it may develop a patina, which can be removed with, for example, vinegar and salt
- Stainless steel: especially robust, low-maintenance and doesn't develop a patina
- How to use: rinse your mouth with warm water, hold the scraper at both ends, and gently draw it from the back of the tongue to the front 2–3 times
- Care: rinse under running water after use and dry
