In the standing variation of Marichyasana III, the lifted leg rests on a raised surface instead of the floor — ideal for experiencing spinal rotation fully, without being limited by restricted mobility in a seated position.
Yoga Chair with Foam Plates: A Base for the Lifted Leg
A stack of Foam Plates (each 30 x 20 x 5 cm, 0.3 kg, made by Yogamatters) on the seat of the yoga chair raises the surface for the bent leg. This allows the leg position to be adapted to individual mobility: more plates for extra height and hip relief, fewer plates for a deeper opening.
The Quarter Block Under the Standing Foot
Placed under the standing foot — the cork version (22.5 cm wide, 8 cm radius) is shown here — the quarter block creates a small, active lift under the heel. This activates the arches and calf muscles and supports spinal alignment from the base up — the foundation for a safe rotation into the thoracic spine.
(Alternative: the oiled white fir version, 25.5 cm wide, 8.5 cm radius, for extra stability with larger feet.)
Wall Ropes for Secure Support
The wall ropes provide additional support during the twist, allowing you to anchor into the rotation rather than forcing your balance.
